Laura de León reveals her secrets to have a body of steel
Laura de León's professional career has been as intense as her workouts. Model, presenter, actress and entrepreneur, she has balanced her career with her personal well-being. Learn more about her life and her routines to maintain a healthy and fit body.
Laura de León began her career on Colombian screens 10 years ago as host of the youth program Nick City, shortly after she presented the pet series Adogtados. The leap to acting did not take long. Encouraged by who became her manager, she decided to do a casting that gave her her first role. It had never been among her plans to be an actress, so she started taking acting workshops in order to better prepare herself to embark on her new path.
Her efforts were rewarded with her first leading role in La playita, which was soon followed by others in novelas such as La luz de mis ojos and Pa'quererte, where she currently plays Azucena Tinoco, a coastal woman who has reconnected her with her Cartagena roots.
In Laura's case, physical activity has been part of her daily routine for five years, when she began her relationship with her boyfriend Salomón Bustamante. We asked her in detail how she keeps in shape and this is what she answered.
How do you take care of yourself?
I take care of my diet and exercise, because they go hand in hand. Everything is a balance and when you see changes in your body, you get motivated. I like to cook, so I get up very early to prepare breakfast, mid-morning, lunch and mid-afternoon. I take them to work, and I eat every three hours in order to have an active metabolism.
I also train. Even if I get home at eight o'clock at night, I go to the gym, unless I'm really tired. I admire people who manage to exercise alone at home, but I prefer to go to the gym or go jogging.
What are your nutritional habits?
I balance carbohydrates, good fats and proteins. I don't eat dairy, we don't get along. I don't eat red meat either, I don't like it. I have eliminated it from my life since I was a child. But on Sundays I do give myself the guarantee to 'sin' with a delicious dessert.
How much time do you dedicate to exercise?
I exercise every day, unless filming schedules prevent me from doing so. I get two hours of exercise between weight training and cardio. I don't overdo it and rest one or two days a week to feel good.
Is there an area of your body that you work the hardest?
Every woman wants to have the most beautiful legs and buttocks of steel. I also love the way my arms and back look, so I work on everything. I love doing shoulders, biceps, triceps and back. I alternate: there are days when I work with bands and others with weights to shake up the body and not give it the same thing, so that it finds a change.
You are very close to getting married, have you modified your exercise routines or nutritional habits at all to prepare for that day?
Yes, I have changed my eating habits. There would be no worse thing than not fitting into your wedding dress on your wedding day. I am very judicious with my eating schedules, I eat every three hours. I also drink more water and eat more fruit; in the morning only, of course. I'm not eating carbs every day; when I do, it's almost always in the morning. Also, I got strict with sweets: on Sundays my sins are not one hundred percent sweets.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start exercising and taking care of their diet?
Cultivate self-love. When you exercise, you feel that the world changes, you see it with different eyes, because doing things for yourself is very comforting. You can start little by little, without torturing yourself. Go to the nutritionist, get a medical evaluation, work with a trainer. Have a lot of patience and love the process.
Laura de León has also had enough time to dabble in film and stage and to create, together with her brother Mario and her boyfriend Salomón, her own sportswear brand: Marea. The venture has been going on for a year now and the three of them have been directly involved in the design of the garments, since they exercise and know first-hand what kind of products those who want to take care of themselves need.
